How to thin out daikon radish (Thinning japanese daikon radish)

The first thinning time for daikon radish (The way to thin japanese daikon radish)

The first thinning of daikon radishes is done right after they sprout. The thinning is done one by one, matching the growth of the daikon radishes. First, from the four sprouted cotyledons, one is thinned out to leave three. The ones to thin out are the sprouts with uneven-shaped cotyledons, insect damage, or signs of disease.

For thinning daikon radishes, it is recommended to use scissors. Place the scissors at the base of the sprout and cut it at the root.

When thinning daikon radishes, you can pull them out by hand, but this might damage the roots of the plants you want to keep. That’s why it’s better to use scissors for thinning if possible. (For daikon radish, which grows a large root, the roots are especially important.)

I thinned the daikon radish, leaving 3 cotyledons. The first thinning is now complete.

The second thinning time for japanese daikon radish (How to thin daikon radish)

The second thinning of daikon radishes is done when they have 3 to 4 true leaves. About one week has passed since the first thinning, and about 12 days have passed since planting the daikon seeds.

The key point for the second thinning is the daikon radish leaves. Keep the plants with leaves growing upward, light green in color, and with a balanced shape. On the other hand, thin out plants with leaves that spread out and lie flat or have an unusually dark color.

The thinning is done the same way as the first time, use scissors and cut at the base.
