Making soil for strawberries (Growing japanese strawberry) – Farming practices for strawberries
How to grow strawberries in rental patch. This is the third year I’m growing strawberries. This season, I’ll grow them outdoors again. The variety I’m planting is Houkou Wase strawberries (japanese june bearing strawberries). The Houkou Wase strawberry is a good variety for home gardens. It is also strong against diseases, so it’s recommended for beginners.
This is the first step for growing strawberries, so I’m preparing the soil. I mix fertilizer into the soil and make raised bed. Every year, I grow strawberries with organic methods without pesticides, so I use organic fertilizers.
The bed size for growing strawberries is about 60cm x 60cm (2 feet x 2 feet).

For growing strawberries, the needed fertilizer (starter fertilizer) is 1 liter (1 qt) of cow manure, 50g (1.8 oz) of chicken manure. (Best starter fertilizer for strawberries.)

How to make strawberry bed (Build bed for japanese june bearing strawberries)
After fertilizing, the next step is to create the bed for strawberry. Shape the bed with a trowel and wooden boards.
As a tip for making the strawberry bed, use a trowel to press the edges of the bed and make it slightly compacted. If you press the edges of the bed, you can maintain the shape of the bed.
Afterward, cover the strawberry bed with black polythene mulch, and secure the mulch with mulch pins. Mulching is a traditional method for making the growing strawberries healthy. Mulch will keep the soil moist and the plants clean. Your strawberry bed is complete.
