Molokhia cultivation (Pinching and harvesting molokhia grown outdoors) – Mulukhiya how to grow
How to grow molokhia (mulukhiya) in organic farming. The mulukhiya (jew’s mallow) has grown well since the last thinning. This time, we will do pinching and harvesting.
Molokhia is a vegetable where we harvest the leaves. Pinching it helps side shoots grow and increases the harvest.
Pinching molokhia (Mulukhiya plant care)
The molokhia has grown for about a week after thinning and is now 30cm (1 foot) tall. We will pinch the main stem tips.
The molokhia thinning was done in late June.
After pinching, molokhia grows side shoots. Let the side shoots of the mulukhiya (jew’s mallow) grow to about 30–40cm (1-1.5 feet) long. Pick the soft leaves from the tips of the side shoots that are about 10cm (4 inches) long for harvest.
Harvesting molokhia (The outdoor mulukhiya is ready for harvest)
About one week after pinching, the molokhia (mulukhiya) side shoots have grown, so we will harvest them.
Use scissors to harvest molokhia. When you harvest, pick the soft leaves at the tips of the branches.
There are some things to be careful about when harvesting molokhia. Molokhia (mulukhiya) seeds and pods have poison in them, so do not eat them. We do not know if the flowers and roots have poison, so it is safer not to eat them. When harvesting mulukhiya (jew’s mallow), only pick the young leaves. This will keep you safe.
If you leave the molokhia plant, you can keep harvesting. After a few days, new side shoots will grow, so pick them regularly.
