Harvest Korean leaf lettuce (How to harvest leaf lettuce) – Growing Korean leaf lettuce from seed
Growing Korean green leaf lettuce in open-field culture. This time, I want to harvest the Korean green leaf lettuce. (I will explain about when to harvest leaf lettuce, how do i harvest leaf lettuce.)
Korean green leaf lettuce growing starts around March. When to preparing soil for leaf lettuce? This year, in mid-March, I added starter fertilizer to the Korean leaf lettuce plot and made bed. Leaf lettuce starter fertilizer is chicken manure and canola cake. (Recommended organic fertilizer for leaf lettuce.)
When to Korean leaf lettuce sowing time? The planting time for Korean leaf lettuce seeds was around early April. (Best time to plant leaf lettuce seed is April.)
If you prepare the soil for Korean leaf lettuce around March, it takes a few weeks for the fertilizer to blend into the soil. (In cold weather, fertilizer breaks down slowly.)
We did Korean green leaf lettuce thinning once in late April. Thin the leaf lettuce so that there is one plant per hole in the mulch.
After thinning the Korean green leaf lettuce, no additional fertilizer is needed. Korean leaf lettuce takes about 3 months from planting to the end of harvest, so it’s a vegetable with a relatively short growing period. Vegetables like this grow well with just the starter fertilizer (base fertilizer), so no extra fertilizer is used during growing.
How to harvest Korean leaf lettuce? Korean green leaf lettuce picking method is cut and come again. Cut and come again is best way to harvest leaf lettuce. Korean leaf lettuce grows upward, so harvest it by picking the outer leaves (the ones near the base) one by one.
When to harvest Korean leaf lettuce? Harvest the Korean leaf lettuce when the leaves are about 15 to 20cm (6 to 8 inches) big. (Even if the leaves are small, it’s better to harvest when there are more of them.)
Leave 5 to 6 leaves in the center of the Korean green leaf lettuce. These leaves will grow bigger again and you can harvest them later. (Leaf lettuce cut and come again.)
When to pick Korean green leaf lettuce? This year, since I planted the Korean leaf lettuce seeds in early April, the harvest time will continue until early to mid-July.
As the growing season progresses, the Korean leaf lettuce plants will grow taller. If they reach about 30cm (1 foot), it’s better to harvest the whole plant. (If they get too big, the leaves can become tough and have a stronger bitterness.)
It’s recommended to harvest only the amount of leaf lettuce you will eat that day. This way, you can keep harvesting for a longer time, which is more worthwhile.
