Fertilizer for corn plant (Side dressing sweet corn) – Cultivating sweet corn (Grow maize)
Growing sweet corn in field cultivation. (Growing corn organically.) Last time, I sowed sweet corn seeds. (Planting sweet corn seeds in a outdoor.) It’s been about 25 days since then. This time, I will add fertilizer to the sweet corn.
The first time to add fertilizer to sweet corn is when it has 5 to 6 leaves and is 40 to 50cm (16 to 20 inches) tall. This is when the flower buds start to form, and the size and number of kernels are decided. It’s an important time for growing sweet corn, so be sure to add fertilizer and give it enough nutrients.
I planted corn seeds in early May. (May is best month to plant corn.)
For fertilizing sweet corn plants (side dressing sweet corn), place chicken manure between the plants in 4 spots. To make fertilization easier, make cuts in the mulch.
The amount of fertilizer is 20g (0.7 oz) of chicken manure per spot. Insert the trowel about 10cm (4 in) into the cut and place chicken manure in the widened gap.
Chicken manure is a recommended fertilizer for sweet corn additional fertilizing because it contains a balanced amount of nutrients necessary for sweet corn cultivation. (Chicken manure is best fertilizer for corn.)
The key point about fertilizing is not to use too much. Over-fertilizing can cause pest problems and poor growth. Use the right amount.
After additional-fertilizing, water the chicken manure and cover it with soil. With this, the additional fertilizer for sweet corn plant is completed.
We water the fertilizer, chicken manure, to help the soil microorganisms. (For microorganisms, moist fertilizer is easier to decompose.)
Don’t forget to cover the fertilizer with soil. If chicken manure is exposed on the soil, it can attract pests due to the smell.
If you add fertilizer to the sweet corn but pests still come, it won’t help. After fertilizing, always cover the soil.
