How can I stop crows from eating my strawberries? (Strawberry protection from crows)
Growing strawberries in the ground cultivation. Last time, I did pollination and removed runners from the strawberries. About 15 days have passed since then. This time, I will protect the strawberries from birds. (Keep crows away from strawberries.)
When strawberries get close to harvest time and start to ripen, they are easily targeted by birds and animals. Luckily, no harmful animals come to my strawberry field, so the main focus is on keeping birds away.
Many different birds target strawberries in home gardens, but crows are especially troublesome. (Ripe red strawberries stand out, so they quickly spot them and eat them.)
Strawberry bird protection (Protecting strawberries in the home garden from birds)
For bird protection on strawberries, we use four 90cm (3 feet) stakes and non-woven fabric. This will enclose the strawberry plot and keep birds away. (If you don’t have non-woven fabric, you can also use insect nets.)
If you cover the strawberries with non-woven fabric so the fruits can’t be seen, it will protect them from birds. For animals like raccoons and civet cats, you would need stronger protection than non-woven fabric, or the strawberries might be eaten. However, for bird protection, you don’t need such strong measures.
What is the method for protecting strawberries from birds?
Place the stakes at the four corners of the plot, and then wrap non-woven fabric around the outside. (If the soil is hard and it’s difficult to place the stakes, use a hammer to drive them in.)
I was able to cover the strawberries with non-woven fabric so that the fruit is not visible. This is a relatively simple bird protection method, but I think it can prevent crows and pigeons.
Small birds like sparrows might get in through small gaps, so it may not be completely protected. Using fishing line or other materials for bird protection can reduce the risk even more, but the downside is that it will make it harder to manage the strawberries.
Considering that, I think using the non-woven fabric for bird protection is just right. With that, the bird protection for the strawberries is complete.
