Thinning and side dressing of sugar snap peas (Additional fertilizer for snap peas) – Snap pea care

How to grow sugar snap peas in organic farming. Last time, I explained how to set up a trellis for sugar snap peas and about growing them over winter. About 45 days have passed since setting up the snap pea trellis. This time, I will do thinning and side dressing for the sugar snap peas.

For snap peas, thinning and side dressing are usually done around January after the new year. Sugar snap peas start growing strongly when it gets a bit warmer, but it’s important to finish thinning and side dressing before that. Especially in cold weather, it takes about one month for the fertilizer to work, so do it early.

Thinning of sugar snap peas (Leave 2 snap pea plants per hole)

Thinning of sugar snap peas is done where the plants are crowded. Check the planting spots, and if there are more than 3 snap pea plants, thin them out to leave 2 plants per hole. (If there are 2 or 1 plant in a hole, don’t thin them out and leave them as they are.)

The way to thin is to use scissors at the base of the snap pea plant and cut at the ground level. I don’t recommend thinning by pulling up the sugar snap pea plants by hand. This is because when you pull them up, you might damage the roots of the neighboring snap peas.

We use organic chicken manure for side dressing. (Fully matured fermentation.) To make fertilization easier, make cuts in the mulch.

Make cuts in the mulch

The amount of fertilizer is 10g (0.35 oz) of chicken manure per spot. Organic chicken manure is a recommended fertilizer for snap peas side dressing because it contains a balanced amount of nutrients necessary for sugar snap pea cultivation.

The chicken manure used for fertilizing snap peas

Insert the trowel about 10cm (4 inches) into the cut and place chicken manure in the widened gap. Add 10g (0.35 oz) of chicken manure to each spot, so you need a total of 40g (1.4 oz) for 4 spots.

Insert trowel into the slits in the mulch
Put chicken manure in the hole

After side dressing, water the chicken manure and cover it with soil. With this, the thinning and side dressing of sugar snap peas are complete.
