Snap pea seed planting (How to plant sugar snap pea seeds)

Grow sugar snap peas in mulching culture. Last time, I prepared the soil for snap peas. About 35 days have passed since then. This time, I will plant sugar snap pea seeds. The bed size for growing snap peas is about 60cm x 60cm (2 feet x 2 feet).

The planting time for sugar snap peas is very important. Snap peas grown in autumn and winter are harvested in spring of the next year, so they need to survive the winter. For overwintering, the right plant height is about 15cm (5.9 inches) for snap peas.

To overwinter snap peas at a height of 15cm (5.9 inches), the seed-sowing time is decided by counting back from the overwintering period. The best time to sow seeds is now, in early November. (Sowing too early or too late is not good. The plants could be damaged by cold or frost.)

Sow sugar snap pea plant seeds by seeding in hill. Seeding in hill means planting 3 to 5 seeds together in one hole. This method is used not only for snap peas but also for growing daikon and corn.

After sowing the sugar snap pea seeds, cover them with soil and press down with your hand. Covering with soil and pressing down is called firming, and it’s an important step in planting snap pea seeds.

Pressing down the soil helps the seeds and soil stick together. This allows moisture in the soil to reach the seeds better, making it easier for them to sprout. Firming the soil also reduces moisture evaporation, preventing the seeds from drying out.

Cover the snap pea seeds with soil

After sowing the seeds, we cover the sugar snap pea plot with non-woven fabric. (The placed non-woven fabric is secured by U-shaped garden pin.)

By placing a non-woven fabric, you can prevent the seeds from drying out, and it also shields them from direct contact with watering or rainwater, protecting the seeds.

For sugar snap peas, edamame, and other legumes, we often use non-woven fabric when planting seeds. The reason is to protect the seeds from birds. Birds watch us planting seeds from somewhere and dig them up to eat when no one is around. Be careful!

This non-woven fabric is also used for protecting snap peas from the cold. After the seeds sprout, we keep the fabric on for a while. It’s better to leave some extra space because, as the snap pea sprouts grow, they will push the fabric up from underneath.

After covering with non-woven fabric, water the soil to the point of moisture. (Be careful not to overwater, as it can cause the seeds to rot.) With this, planting sugar snap pea seed is complete.
